Italy Legend Paolo Maldini Appointed FIGC Technical Director to Lead National Rebuild
A New Era for the Azzurri
As part of an ongoing transformation following Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has announced the appointment of legendary defender Paolo Maldini as the governing body's new technical director.
The 58-year-old Maldini, a titan of the game who won five European Cups during his storied career at AC Milan, has signed a four-year deal that will keep him in the role until the conclusion of the 2030 World Cup. The appointment was made by the new FIGC president, Giovanni Malago, who recently took over from Gabriele Gravina.
Strategic Vision and Leadership
Maldini's role is designed to be comprehensive, overseeing not only the senior national team but the entire developmental pathway of the national youth teams. To assist in this demanding transition, Maldini will be joined by his former Milan teammate Leonardo, who will serve in an advisory capacity.
President Giovanni Malago emphasized the importance of Maldini's leadership, stating: "Maldini was always my first choice. I felt he could be the right person to oversee the FIGC's technical sector... Over the past two weeks, we have discussed all the projects in detail, and Paolo immediately told me that he would be happy to involve Leonardo as a consultant because there is a lot of work to do, and it will be demanding and challenging."
A Legacy of Excellence
Maldini brings an unparalleled level of experience to the position. He remains Italy's third most-capped player with 126 appearances, trailing only Gianluigi Buffon (176) and Fabio Cannavaro (136). His playing resume includes reaching the finals of the 1994 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship.
Beyond his playing days, Maldini's administrative experience includes serving as a sporting director and technical director at AC Milan between 2019 and 2023.
Next Steps for the National Team
One of Maldini's first major responsibilities will be the appointment of a new head coach for the national team. Reports suggest that Roberto Mancini is currently the favorite to succeed Gennaro Gattuso in the role.
