Antonelli turns a grid penalty into a home triumph

Kimi Antonelli transformed what was expected to be a damage-limitation weekend into one of the defining victories of the 2026 Formula 1 season, charging from 19th on the grid to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

The Mercedes driver was forced to start at the back after the team fitted fresh engine components, triggering a grid penalty. Instead of surrendering the weekend, Antonelli attacked immediately. He was already 12th when Charles Leclerc’s heavy crash brought out the red flag on Lap 3, then climbed to eighth after the restart and sixth one lap later.

Antonelli eventually battled teammate George Russell for the lead. A Virtual Safety Car gave Mercedes a strategic split: Russell stayed out on hard tires while Antonelli stopped for fresh mediums. That decision dropped Antonelli back and left him with a 15-second deficit, but his pace was strong enough to erase it.

“When a driver and a car are one, then there’s nothing that can stop them,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said after the race.

Antonelli made 26 overtakes, according to Formula 1’s global broadcast statistics, and completed the decisive move on Russell with six laps remaining. Russell’s worn tires were vibrating badly, allowing Antonelli to sweep past on the run toward the Ascari chicane.

The victory made Antonelli the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. It also extended his championship advantage over Russell from 59 points to 66 with 10 races remaining.

“This is the most special podium of the season,” Antonelli said. “To see all the fans on the straight, it’s just incredible.”

The achievement ranks among the sport’s rarest comebacks. Only John Watson, who won from 22nd at Long Beach in 1983, had previously won a world championship grand prix from further back than Antonelli’s starting position.

For Antonelli, the triumph also closed a personal loop. Two years earlier, he crashed on his first Formula 1 practice appearance at Monza. Now, at the same circuit, he had delivered the biggest victory of his young career.
