The Colorado Rapids have completed a landmark sale, transferring Australian center-back Lucas Herrington to Hull City in a deal worth up to $23 million. The fee is a club record for Colorado and stands as one of the most expensive departures in MLS history.

Herrington's journey to the Premier League has been remarkably rapid. After making his senior debut for Brisbane Roar in December 2024, he was scouted and signed by the Rapids. In less than seven months in the United States, he secured a starting spot and earned a place in Australia's World Cup squad.

A Battle for the Signature

Hull City were not the only titans interested in the teenager. Barcelona scouts visited the player in person this spring and submitted an official bid of around $7 million, which the Rapids rejected. Liverpool also monitored the player's progress closely.

Rapids president Pádraig Smith highlighted the aggressive nature of the Hull bid: "Hull came in with an aggressive position and we got to a level we felt was appropriate for a player not only for Lucas’ potential, but what he’s performing at right now."

Impact on the League and Club

The deal is seen as a milestone for the MLS, proving the league can produce talent ready for the world's most demanding stages. "This deal showcases MLS for what it is: A top-tier league globally that produces young talent that can go into top leagues and play right from the get go," Smith added.

The Rapids intend to reinvest the staggering funds into their squad. Under manager Matt Wells, the club is currently focusing on improving its attacking output, as they currently rank 17th in the league for goals despite high possession stats. The club is expected to pursue another designated player to bolster the offense.
