Spain return home with belief restored

Spain will play on home soil for the first time since winning the World Cup when they host Croatia in Seville, and coach Luis de la Fuente says the national team has rediscovered the spirit that surrounded the country’s historic 2010 side.

“Where we are going, we have recovered the spirit of 2010; people are proud to be Spanish,” De la Fuente said at his press conference. “I am honoured to be the national coach of my country. I have a house in Seville, and it causes me a very special emotion.”

Spain’s recent form has strengthened that sense of optimism. They are unbeaten in 39 matches across 90 minutes, winning 30 and drawing nine, while their latest success was a dramatic 3-2 comeback against England. Mikel Oyarzabal came off the bench to score the decisive goal, continuing his strong record against the Three Lions.

Croatia provide a serious test

Spain and Croatia both began their Nations League campaigns with victories. Spain’s opponents defeated Czechia 2-1 and sit level with La Roja in Group A3, behind only on goal difference.

Spain are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Croatia, winning two and drawing the other before prevailing on penalties in the Nations League. De la Fuente, however, warned that past results will offer no guarantee.

“We know Croatia well; we have played a lot with them. They have world-class players and a very competent new coach,” he said. “We have to give a better version of the one we gave in London. Footballers understand it that way. Every day we demand more from ourselves because the opponents are more complicated every day.”

The Spain coach also insisted Croatia have the quality to compete, stressing that even a superior team can lose if it fails to meet the demands of the occasion.
