Brian Brobbey scores Premier League hat-trick in defeat for Sunderland at Manchester City
Historic losing hat-trick at Etihad
Brian Brobbey etched his name in Premier League history on Sunday after scoring a hat-trick as part of the losing side. The Netherlands striker is now only the fifth different player to do so in a Premier League match, after netting three times during Sunderland's 5-3 defeat by Manchester City.
It is the first time a player has scored a hat-trick in a losing Premier League game since 2007, and only the sixth time since the competition's formation in 1992.
Previous losing hat-tricks
The last player to achieve the feat was Roque Santa Cruz, scoring a hat-trick for Blackburn Rovers in a 5-3 defeat by Wigan Athletic in December 2007.
The four other instances all took place before 2000:
- Matt le Tissier: Oldham Athletic 4-3 Southampton, 8 May 1993
- Matt le Tissier: Southampton 3-4 Nottingham Forest, 19 August 1995
- Dion Dublin: Sheffield Wednesday 4-3 Coventry City, 4 December 1995
- Dwight Yorke: Newcastle United 4-3 Aston Villa, 30 September 1996
Former Southampton forward Matt le Tissier holds the dubious honour of scoring hat-tricks in two Premier League losses, in the competition's inaugural season at Oldham Athletic in May 1993 and again in an August 1995 home loss to Nottingham Forest.
