‘Your 3D Cricketer’: Indian All-Rounder Vijay Shankar Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket

End of an Era for the '3D Cricketer'

Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket, bringing an end to a career that saw him represent India on the global stage and lead domestic teams to multiple championships. Known for his versatility, Shankar stepped away from the game after a professional journey that spanned 25 years since he first picked up a bat at age 10.

A Journey of Highs and Challenges

Shankar's international career included 12 ODIs and nine T20Is, during which he accumulated 324 runs and claimed nine wickets. One of the most talked-about moments of his career was his selection for the 2019 ODI World Cup squad, a move that sparked significant debate at the time. Although he featured in three matches during the tournament, a toe injury prematurely ended his campaign, leading to Mayank Agarwal being brought in as a replacement.

In a heartfelt farewell message shared on social media, Shankar expressed his gratitude: “A HEARTFELT THANK YOU. Cricket is my life. I started playing when I was 10, and 25 years later, I am grateful and blessed to have played at every level and to the highest level. Representing our country will always be one of my proudest and happiest moments,”

Domestic Dominance and IPL Success

Beyond the national team, Shankar was a powerhouse in domestic cricket. He led Tamil Nadu to victories in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he appeared in 78 matches, representing various franchises including the Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans. He was notably part of the Gujarat Titans squad that clinched the title in 2022.

Reflecting on specific career milestones, he highlighted the honor of bowling the final over in India’s 500th ODI at Nagpur and taking his first wicket at the 2019 World Cup as memories he will cherish forever.

Overcoming Adversity

The 35-year-old also used his retirement announcement to address the mental toll of professional sports, candidly discussing the criticism he faced throughout his career.

“I have faced unreal hate and negativity. Let me take this opportunity to let you know that I chose to ignore and move forward. If I can do that, anyone can! Think positively and work hard,” Shankar stated, encouraging others to maintain a positive mindset.

While retiring from domestic and IPL cricket, Shankar indicated that he remains open to exploring new opportunities to stay involved in the sport he loves. He concluded his note with his signature moniker, signing off as "Your 3D cricketer, Vijay Shankar."
