‘Your 3D Cricketer’: Indian All-Rounder Vijay Shankar Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket

Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar has officially announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket. The 35-year-old, known for his versatility and dubbed the '3D cricketer,' concludes a career that spanned across domestic cricket and the international stage, representing India in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals (T20Is).

A Career of Milestones

Shankar's international journey included 12 ODIs and nine T20Is, where he accumulated 324 runs and claimed nine wickets. One of the most discussed chapters of his career was his selection for the 2019 ODI World Cup, where he was chosen over Ambati Rayudu. Despite featuring in three matches during the tournament, a toe injury prematurely ended his campaign, leading to Mayank Agarwal's inclusion in the squad.

Reflecting on his journey in a heartfelt social media post, Shankar expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to play at the highest level. “A HEARTFELT THANK YOU. Cricket is my life. I started playing when I was 10, and 25 years later, I am grateful and blessed to have played at every level and to the highest level. Representing our country will always be one of my proudest and happiest moments,” he wrote.

Domestic and IPL Success

Beyond the national team, Shankar was a pillar for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, steering the team to victories in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In his final season, he represented Tripura.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shankar appeared in 78 matches across four franchises: Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans. A crowning achievement in his IPL career was being part of the Gujarat Titans' title-winning squad in 2022.

Overcoming Adversity

Shankar did not shy away from discussing the challenges he faced, specifically the criticism and social media backlash that often accompanied his career. He urged others to maintain a positive mindset despite the noise.

“I have faced unreal hate and negativity. Let me take this opportunity to let you know that I chose to ignore and move forward. If I can do that, anyone can! Think positively and work hard,” Shankar stated, concluding his note with the signature phrase, "Your 3D cricketer."

While stepping away from professional play, the all-rounder indicated that he remains open to exploring new opportunities to stay involved with the sport he loves.
