Entering the clash on an eight-game unbeaten run across all competitions, LAFC knew all three points would temporarily move them top of the West ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps' fixture against the Seattle Sounders. However, a string of wasted chances and late defensive chaos brought their streak to a sudden halt.

Wasteful Finishing Proves Costly for LAFC

Son Heung-min endured a frustrating evening in front of goal. The forward smashed an early effort into the side netting before Denis Bouanga thought he had broken the deadlock in the 21st minute by beating San Diego goalkeeper CJ dos Santos. However, a VAR check ruled that Bouanga had committed a handball in the build-up, overturning the goal.

Son was then presented with a glorious opportunity in the 36th minute but failed to capitalize under pressure from Luca Bombino right in front of an open net. The missed chances continued into the second half, with Son dragging a one-on-one chance wide of the target and Dos Santos pulling off a sensational recovery save to tip away Eddie Segura's header.

Late Penalty Drama Decides the Derby

With the game seemingly headed for a scoreless stalemate, LAFC were hit with a crushing blow in the 89th minute. Defender Ryan Porteous committed an inexplicable handball while trying to defend the near post during a corner kick.
