Arteta plays down contract uncertainty at the Emirates

Mikel Arteta has moved to draw a line under speculation surrounding his Arsenal future, insisting there is “no reason for any panic” as he enters the final year of his contract at the club.

The 44-year-old Spaniard, who took charge at Emirates Stadium in December 2019, says his commitment to the Gunners remains absolute despite his deal ticking towards expiry.

‘They don’t have to worry about any of that’

Speaking about the ongoing discussions, Arteta was emphatic that supporters should not be concerned by the lack of a signed extension.

“They [the fans] don’t have to worry about any of that because I want to be here, I’m extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with,” Arteta said.

“When we have the possibility, we will resolve that. That’s it. Everybody feels comfortable that the timing of the contract is not going to be an issue because my will certainly is to be here and I’m very happy here.

“My feeling from the club is the same one. That’s why everyone is doing things in a very organic way.”

Kroenke’s priority, no rush from the boss

Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke stated back in May that securing a contract extension for Arteta was a priority for the club. However, the manager himself insists there is no rush on the matter.

A trophy-laden reign

Arteta’s tenure has delivered silverware and historic milestones. Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for a Premier League title last season, pipping Manchester City to the crown with a single game to spare. He has also lifted one FA Cup and two Community Shields during his time in north London, and guided the Gunners to just their second-ever Champions League final last term.

Overall, Arteta has won 213 of his 353 games in charge (D67 L73) since taking the reins in December 2019.

Chance to add another shield

Arteta could lift the Community Shield once again this weekend when Arsenal face Manchester City on Sunday. As a player, he won both of his Community Shield appearances (2014, 2015), and as a manager he has won both contested so far (2020, 2023) – with both managerial triumphs coming via penalty shoot-out.

Only Manchester United (21) have won the Community Shield more often than Arsenal (17, including shared honours), with the Gunners winning each of their last five. Arsenal have also won all three of their matches when reigning as Premier League champions (1998, 2002, 2004).
