Bangladesh Announces Women's T20 World Cup Squad with Strategic Focus on Spinners

Strategic Squad Selection for Bangladesh Women's T20 World Cup

Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced its squad for the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup, with a notable emphasis on spin bowling. Only two pace bowlers, Marufa Akhter and Fariha Islam Trisna, have been included, while the majority of the squad relies on spinners. The decision was influenced by the anticipated pitch conditions in England, which are expected to favor spin, as well as the narrow pace bowling pipeline in the country.

Bangladesh Women's T20 Squad

Chief selector Sazzad Ahmed explained the rationale behind the selection: "The pace bowlers pipeline in Bangladesh is very narrow and at important moments they fall into injuries. Though England wickets are expected to be pace-friendly, the behaviour of the wickets in the recent past suggest that it is assisting the spinners like the sub-continent where the ball spins a lot. So taking the conditions into consideration, we have kept our faith on spinners and we must accept there are not many pacers in our pipeline."

Replacement of Sharmin Sultana with Taj Nehar

Sharmin Sultana was originally considered for the ODI format, while Taj Nehar has been included due to her versatility as a top-order batter who can bat anywhere from No.1 to No.6. Sazzad highlighted that Taj's inclusion is intended to address the team's issue of scoring runs in the final 5 overs of the innings.

"Sharmin Sultana was originally considered for the ODI format. On the other hand, Taj Nehar is a versatile player who can bat anywhere from No.1 to 6 and we believe that Taj Nehar can play an effective role in solving the team's problem of scoring runs, especially in the last 5 overs of the innings," Sazzad stated.

Concerns Over Defensive Batting Approach

Sazzad also acknowledged the team's defensive batting approach as a significant challenge, stating, "Yes, the defensive batting approach is currently a major concern for the team while it is not possible to change it overnight, the selectors are working on solving this problem."

He noted that Nigar Sultana Joty, the captain, is still playing despite managing injuries, and that her potential would have been greater had she not been plagued by injuries. "Joty has the ability to dominate world-class (opponents) but she has been dealing with injuries for a long time. Had it not been for this injury she could have gone to a much higher level," he added.

Preparation for the T20 World Cup

The team is scheduled to depart for Edinburgh on May 25 for a tri-series involving Scotland and the Netherlands, aimed at acclimatizing the players to English conditions. The squad will then travel to Loughborough for the official ICC T20 World Cup warm-up matches before the tournament begins on June 12.
