Arsenal sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51m to shore up defence
Arsenal complete Konsa deal
Arsenal have signed Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51 million, with a further £4 million available in potential add-ons. The 28-year-old defender has agreed a four-year contract with the Premier League champions.

The move follows a long-running search for a third senior centre-back to support William Saliba and Gabriel. Saliba is expected to miss several months with a back injury, while Jurrien Timber is still recovering from groin surgery. Arsenal identified the need for a defender with Premier League experience who could step into the team immediately and cover at right-back when required.
Price resolved after lengthy negotiations
Arsenal initially valued Konsa closer to £40 million, while Villa were seeking approximately £60 million. The clubs eventually reached a compromise, with ownership-level discussions helping to overcome strained relations between the two sides.
Villa had offered Konsa a new contract that would have made him one of the club’s highest earners, but the agreement was never signed. With two years remaining on his existing deal and the defender approaching his 29th birthday, Villa viewed the transfer as an opportunity to make a substantial profit on the approximately £12 million they paid Brentford for him in 2019.
Villa are now pursuing defensive reinforcements. An £18 million offer plus add-ons for Taylor Harwood-Bellis of Southampton was rejected, while Joel Ordonez of Club Brugge and Fikayo Tomori of Milan have also been considered.
Konsa convinced by Arsenal opportunity
Konsa was attracted by the chance to join the champions, remain in London and work alongside Arsenal’s England contingent. He has a particularly close relationship with Bukayo Saka, and positive conversations with the club helped convince him that the move was right.
Born in east London and a graduate of Senrab FC, Konsa grew up supporting Tottenham Hotspur despite now joining their north London rivals. His versatility was another attraction for Arsenal. Although centre-back is his preferred position, he has also played at right-back for England.
“Wherever the manager wants me to be, I’ll always do my best and I feel comfortable there whether it’s centre-back or right-back,” Konsa said during the World Cup.
Arsenal explored alternatives
Before agreeing the deal, Arsenal examined several alternatives because of the gap between their valuation and Villa’s asking price. Their interest in Cristian Romero was significant, but Tottenham Hotspur resisted the prospect of selling to a direct rival. Arsenal also looked at Marc Pubill and Jarrell Quansah, though Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen were unwilling to sell on terms Arsenal considered viable.
Konsa will need time to reach full match fitness after receiving an extended break following the World Cup. He returned to training only late last week, making Arsenal’s second league fixture on August 31 at Villa Park a possible early target.
Arsenal view the signing as defensive insurance rather than a change in strategy. Once Saliba returns, the club will have a deep group of centre-backs, but Konsa’s experience is intended to protect one of the team’s principal strengths while the club continues to assess attacking options.
