Gasly Hails 'Aligning Stars' as Alpine Secures Strong Points Haul in Barcelona

Pierre Gasly has expressed confidence that the "stars are aligning" for Alpine following a productive weekend at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Despite facing significant performance struggles during the event, Gasly managed to secure a P7 finish, extending his impressive points-scoring streak this season.

A Recovery Drive from the Back

The weekend started on a difficult note for the Frenchman, who qualified P14 as the team's single-lap speed lagged behind their race pace. Gasly described the experience as a "reality check," noting that he struggled significantly with braking in Turn 1 and Turn 4 throughout the event. However, a combination of a strong recovery drive and tactical team maneuvers allowed him to climb through the order.

"You see all the stars? They’re all coming together at the moment," Gasly remarked. "It was a very tough Saturday and it wasn’t an easy weekend for me behind the wheel. In the end we managed to find ourselves in the fight for best of the rest."

Team Strategy and Reliability

Alpine's success in Barcelona was bolstered by team orders and mechanical consistency. The team ordered a driver swap during the race, allowing Gasly to move ahead and capitalize on other drivers' retirements. His teammate, Franco Colapinto, supported the decision, stating, "They had a much bigger picture from outside the car. It was a good decision, a team decision I think to score points with both cars."

While Colapinto ultimately finished P10 after a 10-second time penalty for a yellow flag infringement, the combined effort ensured Alpine solidified their fifth-place position in the constructors' standings. Gasly highlighted the team's reliability as a key advantage in a season where many competitors have faced technical failures.

Looking Ahead to Austria

Despite the positive result, Gasly remained realistic about the current performance gap between Alpine and the top four teams. He emphasized that while they are currently the "best of the rest," significant work is needed to close the distance to the frontrunners.

"We know at the minute we don’t have the performance to fight with the top four – the gap this weekend was actually very big," Gasly admitted. "We definitely need to work on that and try to close up... hopefully we can have more pace in Austria."

The weekend also brought a personal victory for Gasly, as a successful Right of Review into penalties from the Monaco Grand Prix saw him reinstated to P3 in that race's final classification, marking his first podium of 2024.
