FIA's WMSC Ratifies F1 Regulatory Changes for 2027 and 2028

The FIA's World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) has officially ratified Formula 1's regulatory changes for 2027 and 2028 during their mid-2026 meeting held in Macau. The meeting, which took place during the FIA Conference, marked a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of the sport's technical and sporting framework.

Key Regulatory Changes Approved

During the WMSC meeting, several crucial updates were approved for the 2026 season, along with proposed changes for 2027 and 2028 being formally ratified. The council addressed various aspects of the sport, from safety concerns to technical specifications.

One of the most notable changes involves the declaration of 'Heat Hazard' conditions, which can now be split between Sprint and Race sessions. A Heat Hazard will still be declared—for Sprint, Race, or both—24 hours prior to the start of the competition, providing teams and fans with adequate preparation time.

In terms of safety improvements, boost mode has been reintroduced for low grip conditions when the track is wet and visibility is poor. However, this boost will be restricted to preventing power reduction without increasing output, while the overtake function will remain disabled. These changes have been implemented specifically for safety reasons.

Technical and Sporting Updates

The first issue of the 2027 Technical Regulations has been approved, incorporating a comprehensive set of structural, wording, and targeted technical updates. These modifications aim to improve clarity, consistency, and enforceability while incorporating key learnings from the 2026 season.

From 2027, the duration of pre-season testing will increase from three to four days, reflecting the general complexity of the current generation of Formula 1 cars. This extension allows teams more time to prepare and fine-tune their machinery ahead of the new season.

Additional measures approved include those relating to power unit supply, management of reconnaissance laps, and race distances at selected circuits. Financial regulatory changes linked to amendments to the technical and sporting package for 2027-28 were also ratified.

Furthermore, the WMSC approved changes to rebalance the contribution of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Energy Recovery System (ERS) across the 2027 and 2028 seasons. This includes targeted adjustments to ICE output, fuel energy flow, and ERS deployment, together with increased flexibility in energy management.

FIA President's Statement

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem commented on the latest developments, stating: "The FIA continues to oversee the evolution of the 2026 regulations and work closely with all key stakeholders across the motorsport community. As with every major regulatory change, the process does not end when the cars first take to the track. Continuous dialogue and collaboration are essential to ensuring that the regulations meet the needs of the sport, its drivers, and its fans."

He further added: "Together we are exploring the future direction of the championship and considering how the sport can balance innovation, sustainability, performance, and fan appeal in the years ahead. The discussions around future power unit concepts, including V8 engines powered by sustainable fuels, demonstrate the willingness of all parties to engage in shaping the next chapter of the sport."

The approved regulatory framework represents a significant step forward in Formula 1's evolution, balancing technical innovation with safety considerations and sustainability goals. As the sport continues to adapt to changing circumstances, these updates ensure that Formula 1 remains competitive, entertaining, and forward-thinking in its approach to racing.
