Max Verstappen's future at Red Bull hangs in the balance after his contract exit clause was officially triggered, allowing the four-time world champion to leave if he's outside the top two in the Drivers' Championship going into the summer break.

With Kimi Antonelli leading the standings and Verstappen sitting third, the Dutchman now has until October to notify Red Bull whether he will continue with the team through his 2028 contract.

Mercedes and McLaren Circle

Photos of Toto Wolff, Verstappen, and their families holidaying together during the summer break have fueled speculation about a potential Mercedes move, despite Wolff's public claims that he doesn't want to change his 2027 lineup.

McLaren also held talks with Verstappen's representatives in June, and the team's Hungarian GP victory with their upgrade package may have made them a more attractive destination. Verstappen's race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase has already committed to joining McLaren.

Should Verstappen move, George Russell would be the likely candidate to make way at Mercedes, while Oscar Piastri would be more expendable at McLaren given Norris's status as reigning world champion.

Alonso's 2027 Decision

Fernando Alonso faces his own crossroads at age 45, needing to decide whether to commit to another year with Aston Martin. The Spaniard's contract includes options for both 2027 and walking away.

"My decision for next year is more about the rules," Alonso said after the Belgian GP. "Driving these cars in places like Spa, or Silverstone at the last race, is not what I dream of."

Honda's engine upgrade at Zandvoort will likely influence Alonso's decision, as the Japanese manufacturer's progress could determine whether Aston Martin becomes genuinely competitive in 2027.

Domino Effect Potential

If both Verstappen and Alonso depart their current seats, the ripple effects could reshape the entire grid. Carlos Sainz and Oliver Bearman would be obvious candidates for Aston Martin, while Russell or Piastri could potentially swap to Red Bull.

Within the Red Bull academy, Arvid Lindblad has impressed at Racing Bulls, while Ferrari-linked Oliver Bearman might welcome a move from Haas to a more competitive car.

Esteban Ocon's Haas seat could also be at risk, with Ferrari academy driver Rafael Camara touted as a possible replacement given Haas's close working relationship with the Italian team.
