Russell Endures Another Disastrous Start

George Russell's tumultuous 2026 season reached another low point at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where an engine anti-stall issue on the grid dropped him from sixth to 21st position before the first corner was completed.

"I was on the throttle waiting, then all of a sudden the engine was going all over the place, revving really high and really low," Russell explained. "Add it to the list of things that have happened in the first half of this year and pray things calm down in the second half."

"Never Had a Season Like This"

The British driver described his 2026 campaign as unlike anything he's experienced in his career, citing a string of mechanical failures and unfortunate incidents.

"I've never had a season like this in my whole career, let alone my F1 career," Russell said. "I'm sort of past the point of disappointment now, because if I continue to be disappointed with everything that goes on, I'll just be disappointed every day of the week."

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the team's responsibility: "His problem at the start was fully on us as a team and it isn't good enough. He has suffered too many of these problems."

Antonelli Delivers Damage Limitation Podium

While Russell struggled, championship leader Kimi Antonelli secured a crucial third-place finish despite qualifying seventh due to a three-place grid penalty for a yellow flag infringement.

Antonelli extended his championship lead to 50 points over Lewis Hamilton and 59 points over Russell heading into the summer break. The 19-year-old Italian has now won six races this season.

"It was not an easy race today. It was very difficult to overtake, even when we had significantly more pace than the cars ahead," Antonelli said. "We did well to build a decent tire offset to those ahead throughout the race."

Mercedes Reliability Concerns Mount

Russell was forced to change his power unit ahead of Sunday's race after suffering a water leak in qualifying that required component changes. This marks his fourth engine of the season, though he remains within his allocation.

The reliability issues follow a battery failure at the Canadian Grand Prix, a controversial penalty in Monaco, and a race-ending collision with Hamilton at the Belgian Grand Prix where Russell complained about lacking battery power.

Mercedes identified and fixed a software calibration issue that had been limiting Russell's top speed at Spa, but the Hungarian GP start problem represents a fresh concern for the team.

Wolff: "We Should Have Done Better"

Toto Wolff gave a candid assessment of Mercedes' Hungarian weekend, admitting the team failed to maximize their potential.

"The whole weekend we didn't get the set-ups 100% right and it was always a catch-up game," Wolff said. "If you would have told me before the race that we can have a podium with Kimi, I would have said I'll take it immediately. But now you're looking back, the prevailing feeling is that we should have done better."

Despite the struggles, Mercedes leads the Constructors' Championship by 72 points over Ferrari, while Antonelli's 219 points give him a commanding position in the drivers' standings.
