Europe Backup Plan Activated

Formula 1 will relocate the final two races of the 2026 season to European venues if security concerns in the Middle East prevent the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix from taking place as scheduled.

F1 president Stefano Domenicali confirmed that contingency plans are in place, with a mid-September deadline set for making a final decision about the season finale.

"We Will Take the Decision at the Right Time"

"With regard to the end of the season, we are in touch with all the other championships," Domenicali said. "The way that we are structured is that we will take the maximum time for us to see how the situation will develop, and we will take the decision at the right time. That moment would be not before the middle of September."

The sport already cancelled the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix earlier in 2026 due to the ongoing conflict, with Malaysia added to the calendar to host the Bahrain race in October.

Imola Among European Options

Italy's historic Imola circuit is among the venues being considered as a replacement, though Domenicali cautioned that nothing is confirmed. "There are some possibilities on the table, but I don't think it's right to make some promises or anticipate certain things."

Brexit-connected documentation challenges make Europe the only viable alternative, as other regions would present similar logistical and security concerns.

Weather Concerns Dismissed

Racing in Europe during late November or early December would typically raise weather concerns, but Domenicali pointed out that expected temperatures are actually colder for the Las Vegas Grand Prix in mid-November.

"The fascinating side is that if I look at the statistics of the temperature in Europe in that time, it is less cool than Las Vegas' average temperature while we are racing," he explained.

A second Las Vegas race was considered but rejected due to concerns about undervaluing the event and competing with the NFL.

2027 Calendar Also Uncertain

Domenicali revealed that contingency plans are also being developed for the 2027 calendar, with F1 delaying its usual announcement schedule.

"In case the situation in the Middle East is not solved, we have options, different plans. But the trigger for that, of course, is at the end of the year, so we have still a lot of time to adjust," he said.

F1 is in talks with Turkey and Portugal about returning to the calendar, while discussions continue with Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand, and Argentina about potential new races from 2028 onwards.

Championship Implications

Any calendar changes could significantly impact the title race, with Kimi Antonelli currently leading by 50 points from Lewis Hamilton with 12 scheduled rounds remaining. Different circuit characteristics at replacement venues could favor certain teams and drivers.

The Formula 1 season resumes after the summer break with the Dutch Grand Prix from August 21-23.
