Wayne Madsen Signs One-Year Derbyshire Red-Ball Deal to Extend Stay Into 19th Season
Derbyshire Captain Commits to Another Year
Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen has signed a one-year red-ball contract with the club, extending his stay into a 19th season. The 42-year-old South Africa-born right-handed batter has scored more than 24,000 all-format runs for the county, including 52 centuries, making him one of the most prolific batters in Derbyshire's history.
Madsen retired from domestic T20 cricket in July, but will continue to lead Derbyshire in red-ball cricket, taking charge for their County Championship Division Two campaign following a sixth-placed finish this season.
Aiming to Take Derbyshire Back to Division One
Speaking to the club's website, Madsen made clear that promotion remains his driving ambition.
"Getting back to Division One is a goal I still have, and I'll do everything I can to help us achieve it," Madsen said.
He added: "To be going into my 19th season with Derbyshire is something I'm incredibly proud of. I've loved my time at the club and I'm really excited to have the opportunity to keep representing Derbyshire and contributing to the team.
"I often speak about how Derbyshire has become an adopted home for me and my family, and this new deal will allow us to spend time here, but also in South Africa, having moved back there last winter."
Two Division Two Titles and a Second Spell as Skipper
Madsen skippered Derbyshire to the Division Two title in 2012 and took the captain's role on again in 2025, underlining his enduring value to the club both as a leader and as a run-scorer.
Arthur: 'We Could Not Be Happier'
Derbyshire's head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, welcomed the news and acknowledged that Madsen is entering the closing stages of a long career.
"Wayne is under no illusions, he knows he is closer to the end of his career than the start, but he will continue to give his all for Derbyshire for as long as he is playing and we could not be happier to have him," Arthur said.
With the new deal confirmed, Madsen will once again be the cornerstone of Derbyshire's batting and leadership as the club targets a return to Division One.
