Nike Enters Exclusive Talks to Supply Champions League Match Balls, Ending Adidas' 25-Year Reign

Nike in Exclusive Negotiations for UEFA Club Competitions

Nike is entering exclusive negotiations to become the official match ball provider for the UEFA men’s Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, marking a significant shift in European football sponsorships. This development ends Adidas' 25-year monopoly on the Champions League match ball, which the German sportswear giant has held since 2001.

UEFA, through its joint venture UC3 with European Football Clubs (EFC), launched a tender process in March 2026 to maximize revenue from this sponsorship category. The process attracted interest from major brands including Adidas, Nike, and Puma. Sources indicate that while Adidas sought to retain the rights, Nike has emerged as the frontrunner.

The new agreement, if finalized, will cover all UEFA men's club competitions from the 2027-28 season through 2031. UC3 issued a statement on Thursday confirming the exclusive talks: “UC3, the joint venture between UEFA and European Football Clubs (EFC) that controls and manages the strategic marketing, sales and delivery of commercial rights for UEFA club competitions, has agreed to enter an exclusive negotiation period with Nike to become the official match ball provider for all UEFA men’s club competitions from 2027 to 2031. This decision follows a highly competitive tender process launched in March 2026 by UC3 and its agency, Relevent Football Partners. No further comment will be made in the meantime.”

Background on Adidas' Dominance and Market Shifts

Adidas has been a staple in elite football competitions, supplying match balls for the Champions League since 2001—after taking over from Nike—and also for the European Championship and FIFA World Cups. However, recent years have seen disruptions from competitors. Puma, for instance, secured the Copa America deal from Nike in 2024, took over the Premier League match ball at the start of this season (previously Nike's from 2000-01), replaced Nike as Serie A supplier from 2022-23, and has been La Liga's official ball provider since 2019-20.

For the Europa League and Conference League, Decathlon's Kipsta brand has been the supplier since 2024, with that deal also expiring at the end of the 2026-27 season. Adidas will continue providing balls for the Champions League in the upcoming 2026-27 season, as will Kipsta for the other competitions, ensuring a smooth transition.

Broader Trends in UEFA Sponsorships

This move aligns with UC3 and Relevent Football Partners' strategy to evolve sponsorship partnerships for higher revenue. In a similar vein, in October 2026, AB InBev entered exclusive talks to replace Heineken as the beer sponsor for UEFA men's club competitions. Heineken had held the role since 1994, with its current three-year deal worth €120 million annually. AB InBev is reportedly offering €200 million per year for a six-year contract starting in 2027, a 66% increase.

These changes reflect a competitive market where brands are vying for visibility in Europe's premier club football, potentially ushering in a new era of innovation and increased commercial value for UEFA competitions.
