Kurt Cobain’s historic Olympia apartment where 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' originated opens on Airbnb
Nirvana fans and music enthusiasts now have the rare chance to stay inside a landmark piece of rock history. The downtown Olympia, Washington apartment where frontman Kurt Cobain lived from 1989 to 1991—during which he wrote much of the band's landmark 1991 album Nevermind—has been converted into a short-term rental on Airbnb.
Located on Pear Street in Olympia, roughly 60 miles south of Seattle, the triplex building was constructed around 1914, according to the Olympia Historical Society. Cobain lived there during a pivotal period between the release of Nirvana's 1989 debut album Bleach and the breakout success of Nevermind. According to the historical society, Cobain wrote approximately 75 percent of his total lifetime musical output while residing in the home.
The Wall That Named an Era-Defining Anthem
Among the property's most legendary moments is the origin of Nirvana's biggest hit. In August 1990, Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, scrawled the phrase "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" on Cobain's bedroom wall during a night out. Hanna was referring to a brand of deodorant, but Cobain, unaware of the product, interpreted the line as an anti-establishment slogan and later adapted it into the title for "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
Cobain began composing the track just weeks before Nirvana recorded Nevermind, an album that has since sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and propelled the grunge icons to international stardom.
A Preserved Piece of Grunge History
During his time at the triplex, Cobain and his then-girlfriend Tracy Marander paid approximately $137 per month for both rent and utilities. Today, stays at the historic studio range between $250 and $300 per night, with a two-night minimum stay requirement.
The listing offers a fully furnished studio complete with a queen bed, Wi-Fi, modern kitchen appliances, and access to a peaceful backyard featuring a cherry tree. Several original fixtures from Cobain's era remain intact, complemented by framed Nirvana photographs and memorabilia.
Guest reviews reflect the emotional resonance of the property for music fans, earning the listing a 4.8-star rating. One visitor commented: "A very special place, still can’t quite believe we stayed here. Many of the fixtures and fittings that Kurt would have used are intact (the shower, sink, taps, some door handles, the kitchen cabinets etc.) and probably much more."
Another guest noted: "For any fan of the grunge legend Kurt Cobain this is a must stay! The history of this apartment is legendary it was during the time of Bleach and beginning of Nevermind... It makes it an experience to live in this relic. To see how a ‘rockstar’ would live."
