The duo first met during the making of the 2015 Tamil romantic action comedy Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which starred Nayanthara alongside Vijay Sethupathi and was directed by Vignesh Shivan. In 2017, during an awards ceremony in Singapore where they were seated together, both publicly acknowledged each other's support. Speculation about their future together escalated in March 2021 when Vignesh posted a photo of Nayanthara wearing a ring. Nayanthara later confirmed the news during a television appearance, explaining the low-key nature of the milestone:

"It was my engagement ring. We are private people, so we didn't want to have a grand ceremony. When we decide to get married, we will definitely inform our fans. Our engagement happened in the presence of our immediate family members."

The couple tied the knot on June 9, 2022, in a lavish ceremony held near Chennai. The wedding was attended by several leading figures in Indian cinema, including Rajinikanth and Shah Rukh Khan, before the couple made their first official public appearance as husband and wife two days later.

Later in 2022, Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan announced the arrival of their twin sons, whom they named Uyir and Ulagam, marking a new chapter in their decade-long journey together.
