Leweling’s opener earns Stuttgart only a draw as ten-man Atlético hold firm
Stuttgart dominate early, but Atlético strike back
VfB Stuttgart were held to a 1-1 draw by Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League after Jamie Leweling’s first-half goal was answered by Julián Álvarez shortly after the interval. Atlético finished with ten men, but Stuttgart could not find a decisive second goal despite pressing hard late in the match.

Stuttgart began on the front foot, with Bilal El Khannouss, Joshua Vagnoman, Angelo Stiller and Leweling all testing Jan Oblak during an energetic opening. The home side’s pressure paid off in the 36th minute: Stiller won possession from Marc Pubill near Atlético’s area, and Leweling collected the ball before driving a finish into the bottom corner.
Álvarez equalises; Atlético go down to ten
Atlético responded immediately after the restart. Substitute Ademola Lookman delivered a low cross from the left in the 47th minute, and Álvarez finished from close range to level the score. Stuttgart threatened again through Chris Führich, whose curling effort went narrowly wide.
The match took another turn in the 64th minute, when Morten Hjulmand received a straight red card for a high challenge on Stiller. With a man advantage, Stuttgart pushed for a winner. Grischa Prömel headed wide and later forced a save from Oblak, while Jeff Chabot also came close from a corner. Substitute Dženan Pejčinović sent a stoppage-time header wide, and Atlético held on for the point.
Final score: VfB Stuttgart 1-1 Atlético Madrid
Goals: Jamie Leweling 36’; Julián Álvarez 47’ (assisted by Ademola Lookman)
Red card: Morten Hjulmand 64’
