Sheikh Zayed Stadium: Abu Dhabi's floodlit 20,000-seater that turned India-Pakistan cricket into earthquake relief

The new-wave venue that put Abu Dhabi on the cricket map

Sheikh Zayed Stadium — widely known as the Zayed Cricket Stadium — is a multi-use stadium in Abu Dhabi and one of the newer additions to the Emirates' cricket landscape. Built to modern specifications, it can accommodate 20,000 spectators and comes with well-equipped facilities, including full floodlighting that allows the ground to host matches under lights.

Opened in 2004, tested by first-class cricket within months

The stadium was opened in May 2004, and according to a Times of India venue profile it was built at a cost of $2.5 million. It did not have to wait long for meaningful action: in November of the same year it staged its first first-class match, when Scotland played Kenya in the Intercontinental Cup — an early signal of the venue's ambitions beyond exhibition cricket.

No traditional pavilion, but no shortage of comfort

Architecturally, the ground breaks with convention. There is no pavilion as such at the stadium. Instead, large changing rooms sit under one of the stands, while the teams watch play from inside air-conditioned glass rooms — a practical answer to the Gulf's punishing heat that keeps players and officials comfortable without the traditional dressing-room setup found at older grounds.

Out of the city, but easy to reach

The venue is located in a relatively remote area, about a 30-minute drive from Abu Dhabi's city centre. The distance is the trade-off for a purpose-built arena with space, floodlights and modern infrastructure in a city better known for its desert outskirts than its sporting precincts.

Cricket for a cause: the 2006 India-Pakistan 'Friendship Series'

Among the most significant moments in the ground's early history came in April 2006, when India and Pakistan met there in a 'Friendship Series'. The series was expected to raise $10 million for earthquake relief, with 75 per cent of the proceeds earmarked for Pakistan and the remainder for India — a striking example of cricket being deployed as both diplomacy and charity at a venue barely two years old.

A modern multi-use arena

With its 20,000-seat capacity, floodlight facilities and well-equipped amenities, Sheikh Zayed Stadium has positioned itself as a newer-generation, multi-use venue in the region — capable of serving cricket and other sports alike, and of staging matches that carry weight far beyond the boundary rope.
