It was a day of contrasting fortunes in the Women's Hundred, as Trent Rockets held their nerve in a thrilling finish against Sunrisers Leeds while Manchester Supergiants tightened their grip on third place with a commanding win over a struggling MI London side.

Rockets survive Sutherland scare

Defending 139 for 7 at Trent Bridge, Trent Rockets restricted Sunrisers Leeds to 134 for 5 to secure a five-run win that strengthened their position in second place on the points table. The victory, however, was far from straightforward.

Annabel Sutherland nearly pulled off a remarkable heist for the visitors, smashing an unbeaten 59 off just 30 balls. But the Rockets' bowlers held their composure when it mattered most. Ash Gardner struck with the very first ball of the chase to set the tone, before Georgia Adams and Charley Phillips removed Jess Jonassen and Phoebe Litchfield respectively to keep the pressure on.

Gardner's tidy penultimate set and Kim Garth's final five deliveries ultimately ensured the visitors fell short in a nail-biting finish.

Earlier, Sophia Dunkley and Nat Sciver-Brunt had laid the foundation for the Rockets after Beth Mooney's early dismissal. Dunkley followed up her fifty from the previous match with another polished 56, sharing a brisk 76-run stand with Sciver-Brunt, who contributed 33, to put the home side in control.

Although Jess Jonassen and Hannah Baker triggered a middle-order collapse, Bess Heath's late boundaries helped the Rockets recover sufficiently to post what proved to be a winning total.

Ecclestone masterclass as Supergiants demolish MI London

In the day's other Women's Hundred fixture, Manchester Supergiants strengthened their hold on third place with a commanding six-wicket win, chasing down 93 with 28 balls to spare and consigning MI London to yet another defeat — they remain without a win in the tournament.

Sophie Ecclestone was the architect of MI London's downfall with the ball. After Supergiants elected to field, the left-arm spinner removed Alice Davidson-Richards and Hayley Matthews inside the first eight balls to leave MI London reeling at 1 for 2. Ecclestone finished with miserly figures of 2 for 7 from her 20 balls, while also taking two catches and effecting a direct-hit run out in a brilliant all-round display.

Backed by disciplined spells from Grace Ballinger, Maitlan Brown and Ryana MacDonald-Gay — who picked up 3 for 19 — and sharp fielding led by Meg Lanning's three catches, the Supergiants bundled MI London out for just 92 in 99 balls.

The chase was led by Meg Lanning, who scored 43, after Smriti Mandhana's fluent 34 had laid the platform. Melie Kerr briefly delayed the inevitable by dismissing Richa Ghosh and Paige Scholfield, but Mady Villiers struck the winning boundary to seal a comfortable victory.
