Bangladesh opt for single white-ball leader

Bangladesh have named Litton Das as their new ODI captain, handing the experienced wicketkeeper-batter the responsibility of leading the side in the 50-over format until the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

The appointment means Litton will now captain the Tigers in both white-ball formats, having already been in charge of the T20I team. He replaces Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has been relieved of the ODI captaincy as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reshapes its leadership group ahead of the next World Cup cycle.

Tamim Iqbal confirms leadership change

BCB president Tamim Iqbal announced Litton's appointment during a press conference in Mirpur, confirming that the board has opted for a change in ODI leadership as Bangladesh begin preparations for the 2027 World Cup.

Litton has previously led the national side whenever the regular captain was unavailable and now receives the role on a full-time basis. While this is his first full-time ODI captaincy assignment, Litton is no stranger to leadership. He has captained Bangladesh in seven international matches, registering three wins, three defeats and one no-result, gaining valuable experience in the role.

A reversal from the board

The decision marks a significant shift from the board's earlier stance. In April, the BCB had extended Mehidy Hasan Miraz's tenure as ODI captain through the 2027 World Cup while retaining Litton as T20I skipper. The latest move, however, sees Litton assume charge of both white-ball teams as Bangladesh look to chart a new direction under a single leader.

The BCB will hope that continuity under Litton helps Bangladesh build a settled squad ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Litton's white-ball pedigree

Litton Das, who made his ODI debut in 2015, has established himself as one of Bangladesh's key white-ball batters. He has accumulated 2,869 runs in 104 ODIs with five centuries and 14 fifties, and his career-best score of 176 remains one of the highest individual ODI scores by a Bangladeshi batter.
