Chennai Super Kings Appoint Zaheer Khan as Head Coach Following Stephen Fleming Exit
Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially appointed former India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, ushering in a brand-new era for the franchise.
End of Fleming's Historic Era
Zaheer replaces long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming, who had been in charge of CSK's dugout since 2009. The franchise decided to part ways with Fleming after failing to qualify for the IPL playoffs for a third consecutive season.
Announcing the move on social media platform X, the franchise declared: "Left Arm 'Taking' Over! Welcoming Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings."
Rich Coaching and Administrative Experience
Since hanging up his boots in 2017, Zaheer has accumulated extensive coaching and management experience across the league. He previously served as Director of Cricket Operations and Head of Global Development for Mumbai Indians after playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, and Mumbai Indians during his active career. More recently, Zaheer took on the role of mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025 before parting ways ahead of the subsequent season.
A Decorated International Pedigree
As a player, Zaheer represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs, and 17 T20Is, capturing a total of 610 international wickets across formats. He famously finished as India's joint-highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps during their triumphant 2011 ICC ODI World Cup campaign. In the IPL, the left-arm pacer claimed 102 wickets in 100 matches at an average of 27.27.
CSK will look to Zaheer's tactical acumen and leadership to revitalize the squad and bring the trophy back to Chepauk in the upcoming season.
