Carlos Sainz signs new multi-year Williams contract extension
Carlos Sainz has committed his long-term future to Williams after signing a new multi-year contract extension, ending speculation regarding his position on the Formula 1 grid for 2027 and beyond.
The announcement confirms an unchanged driver line-up for Williams heading into next year, following Tuesday's confirmation that teammate Alex Albon had signed a contract extension through the 2027 campaign.
Commitment to Long-Term Vision
The 31-year-old Spaniard joined Williams in 2025 following a successful four-year stint at Ferrari. Although his debut season delivered two podium finishes in Azerbaijan and Qatar—securing fifth in the Constructors' Championship for Williams—the 2026 season under new technical regulations has proven much tougher.
Williams entered the summer break sitting ninth in the standings with only 11 points scored across the opening 11 rounds, with Sainz contributing just six points. Despite performance struggles sparked by pre-season delays and an overweight car, Sainz emphasized his confidence in the team's ongoing restructuring.
"I'm thrilled to announce my continued journey with the Williams F1 Team family," Sainz said. "I truly believe in the people that form this team, both at the factory and at the racetracks, and the investments and hard work that are happening in the background. We have what it takes to turn this around together. I'm as committed as I was on day one to helping get Williams back to where it belongs, and I look forward to creating more memories with the team."
Vowles Hails Driver Stability
Williams Team Principal James Vowles praised Sainz's technical leadership and relentless work ethic as the team prepares to mark its 50th anniversary in Formula 1 next season.
"From the moment he joined, Carlos' talent behind the steering wheel and dedication back at the factory have been extremely valuable for this project—working day in, day out with his engineers to find every millisecond," Vowles explained. "He is a leader of this team, and I'm thrilled that he can see what's possible as we continue to rebuild it. Along with Alex, I truly believe we have one of the strongest line-ups on the grid, and a team capable of fighting for every ounce of performance together."
Between Sainz and Albon, Williams retains a pairing boasting over 370 race starts, more than 1,600 career championship points, and 31 podium finishes, giving the Grove-based outfit crucial continuity as they prepare major upgrades planned for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in September.
