Sri Lanka Women's Cricket Team Under New Coach Jamie Siddons Focuses on Skill Development

Jamie Siddons, the newly appointed head coach of the Sri Lanka women's cricket team, has emphasized the need for players to develop more skills to compete with powerhouse teams like India, Australia, and England. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Siddons outlined his vision for the team as they prepare for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup.

"I just think we need to develop more skills, hit the ball hard, score more boundaries without being reckless," Siddons told reporters, highlighting the technical improvements needed for the team to rise to the level of top international sides.

First Role with Women's Team

This marks Siddons' first coaching role with a women's team. He has extensive experience coaching men's teams, including serving as Bangladesh's coach from 2007 to 2011. Siddons also played one ODI for Australia in 1988 against Pakistan.

Focus on World Cup Performance

Siddons pointed out that Sri Lanka had not performed well in the last two women's World Cups, winning only one match. "That is where we need to see how we can perform better," he said, indicating a focus on improving tournament results.

The Sri Lanka team will face England, New Zealand, and the West Indies in the Women's T20 World Cup later this year. Siddons identified India, Australia, New Zealand, and England as the top teams at present, and emphasized that Sri Lanka will look to do well against England in their first match of the World Cup in June.

"We are focusing on the first game against England, on their home ground and home soil," Siddons said, indicating a strategic approach to the tournament.

Initial Task: Bangladesh Tour

Siddons said his first task will be the team's tour of Bangladesh starting April 20, which includes a three-match T20 and ODI series. "That is where we will look to set our style of play," he said, referring to this upcoming series as an opportunity to establish the team's approach.

Replacing Successful Coach

Siddons has replaced Ramesh Ratnayake, who guided Sri Lanka to the 2024 Asia Cup title with a win over India. This places Siddons in a position to build on recent success while addressing areas needing improvement.

The new coach's emphasis on skill development, boundary-hitting efficiency, and competitive mindset against top teams signals a renewed focus for Sri Lanka's women's cricket program as they prepare for international challenges ahead.
