PCB Weighs Captaincy Change for Shan Masood Following Bangladesh Test Series Defeat
Pressure Mounts on Shan Masood
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing a critical decision this weekend regarding the leadership of the men's Test team. Following a disastrous 0-2 series defeat in Bangladesh, officials are expected to meet to determine the future of captain Shan Masood and head coach Sarfaraz Khan.
The meeting, led by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, will decide if Masood and Sarfaraz will retain their positions for the upcoming tours of England and the West Indies. According to a PCB source, there is a growing sentiment among selectors and board officials that a change is necessary.
"The most important decision is about whether Shan Masood will continue as Test captain for the tours of West Indies and England," a PCB source stated via PTI. "Many selectors and some board officials believe it is time to give Salman Ali Agha the chance to lead the Test side now."
Search for New Leadership
While Shan Masood has expressed a desire to continue in his role, the poor results in Bangladesh may prove detrimental. Salman Ali Agha, who currently leads Pakistan in white-ball cricket, is being viewed as a strong candidate to take over the Test captaincy.
The coaching staff is also under scrutiny. The PCB has not yet finalized an agreement with Sarfaraz Khan, and former captain Younis Khan is reportedly being considered as a replacement. Additionally, Mohammad Hafeez is also under consideration for the head coach position, though no final decision has been reached.
Structural Overhaul and Workload Management
Beyond personnel changes, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is reportedly dissatisfied with the overall progress of Pakistan cricket and is looking to implement broader changes. One of Naqvi's primary goals is to reduce the workload of officials who are currently holding multiple roles within the PCB.
Currently, a group of former cricketers including Misbah Ul Haq, Asad Shafiq, Sarfaraz, and Aaqib Javed serve as national selectors while performing other duties. White-ball head coach Mike Hesson is also involved in selection processes. The upcoming meeting may also include the appointment of a new Director of International Cricket.
The final decisions regarding the team's leadership and coaching structure are expected to be clarified by Saturday.
