Dez Bryant Handcuffed at Gunpoint in Southlake Parking Lot as Daughters Watch, Cited for Assault by Contact

Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant was handcuffed and held on the ground at gunpoint over the weekend after a confrontation with two drivers in Southlake, Texas spiraled into a police encounter that his two daughters witnessed firsthand, according to reports.

Footage of the incident shows Bryant face down in handcuffs alongside two other men, with an officer pointing a firearm in his direction as he lay on the ground. Bryant was later issued a citation for assault by contact, a document that reportedly states no arrest was made.

How the confrontation began

Bryant said the trouble started when two drivers allegedly cut him off in traffic and drove recklessly, prompting him to want to tell them to be more careful on the road. The dispute continued after both parties ended up in the same restaurant parking lot in Southlake.

According to Bryant, an argument broke out with one of the men, who allegedly threatened him and suggested he might shoot him. Bryant clarified that the man never actually pulled out a gun, instead taking out his phone and beginning to record the argument. Bryant admitted he knocked the phone out of the man's hand after asking him to stop recording. The man then threatened to call police — something Bryant said he welcomed, because he believed officers would look into what had happened.

Police arrive, a weapon is drawn

Things took a more serious turn when officers arrived at the parking lot. According to Bryant, an officer drew a gun and ordered the men to get on the ground. The footage shows Bryant lying face down in handcuffs with an officer pointing a firearm in his direction. His girlfriend later arrived with his two daughters, who witnessed the encounter.

Bryant said his overriding concern in that moment was his children seeing him in that position.

"I was really more so concerned about my children, you know, looking at their dad, you know, being on the ground with a gun pointed at me," he said.

Bryant also questioned how the situation was handled, claiming officers did not properly investigate his allegations about the alleged threat or the events that led to the confrontation. He said he wanted authorities to review available surveillance footage to get a clearer picture of what happened.

Citation and court date

According to the citation, Bryant was cited for assault by contact. The document reportedly states that no arrest was made and directs him to appear at Southlake Municipal Court by November 20.

Bryant has maintained that he acted in self-defense and believes the investigation was one-sided. He also said he has previously had positive interactions with local police officers, making the experience particularly disappointing.

A Cowboys career remembered

The former Cowboys wide receiver played eight seasons in Dallas, earning three Pro Bowl selections and finishing his Cowboys career with 73 touchdown catches.

For now, Bryant's account and the available footage have brought fresh attention to the incident, while questions remain about the full sequence of events and the police response.
