Africa Set to Host Global Cricket Spectacle After Over Two Decades

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially revealed the 12 host venues for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. For the first time in 24 years, the 50-over showpiece will return to the African continent, with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia serving as co-hosts.

During a grand ceremony in Johannesburg, the ICC introduced the tournament's official brand identity, 'Three Nations, One Heartbeat'. This theme is designed to symbolize the shared spirit of unity, diversity, and optimism among the three host nations. The branding draws heavily from the African philosophy of 'Ubuntu' — "I am, because we are" — and the campaign theme 'Make the Circle Bigger'.

A Milestone for the Sport

ICC Chairman Jay Shah described the announcement as a "landmark moment for cricket," emphasizing that the unveiling of the host cities signals the start of a journey to unite fans globally. "We are confident that South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will deliver an unforgettable event, showcasing the warmth, passion and rich diversity that make this region truly unique," Shah stated.

Sanjog Gupta, the ICC chief executive, added that the event would be a celebration of both the game and the continent's unique identity, noting that the tournament will showcase a region defined by "extraordinary people, vibrant cultures, breathtaking experiences and deep love for Sport."

New Competition Format and Structure

The 14th edition of the World Cup will feature 14 teams competing in 57 matches under a new three-stage format designed to increase competitiveness:

• The Super Series: Teams ranked 12th to 14th will compete first, with the winner advancing to the main tournament.
• Group Stage: 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six for a round-robin stage. The top three from each group and the best fourth-placed team will advance.
• Super 7: These teams will play 21 matches, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals and eventually the final.

The tournament will be spread across eight cities in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe, and the capital of Namibia:

The launch was attended by several cricketing legends, including Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, and Kagiso Rabada, adding to the anticipation of the tournament's return to African soil.
