Vicario Joins Juventus on Loan, Calls It 'Lifelong Dream' After Tottenham Exit
Juventus End Prolonged Goalkeeper Search with Vicario Capture
Juventus have finally brought their protracted search for a goalkeeper to a close after securing Guglielmo Vicario on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur for the 2026-27 campaign, with an option to make the deal permanent for €8m at the end of the season.
The Bianconeri had been actively scouring the market for a new shot-stopper throughout the transfer window, with Emiliano Martinez and Zion Suzuki both linked with a move to Turin before the club ultimately settled on Vicario as their preferred target. The Italian goalkeeper arrives under the stewardship of manager Luciano Spalletti and could make his debut as early as this weekend when Juventus open their Serie A campaign against Frosinone on Sunday.
"A Lifelong Dream": Vicario's Emotional Reaction
Speaking after the move was confirmed, an emotional Vicario revealed that joining Juventus represented the realisation of a childhood ambition, as quoted by Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla.
"It's truly a great feeling, because it's a lifelong dream," Vicario said. "I've dreamed and hoped for this moment since I was a child. Obviously, you never know for sure that you'll be able to achieve it, so I'm incredibly proud of myself, and of my family, for having achieved it."
The 29-year-old did not hold back in expressing the magnitude of the moment for him personally and professionally.
"Because, for me, having the opportunity to represent Juventus is the most ambitious thing you can ask of life, so this is what I'm most keen to emphasise, because representing these colours, this club, this history is a huge responsibility that I'm absolutely delighted to take on, and I feel it from the heart," he continued. "It's something I still struggle to achieve, but I'm extremely happy."
Falling Out of Favour in North London
Vicario's departure from Tottenham comes after a difficult period in North London. The Italian goalkeeper underwent hernia surgery in March and subsequently found himself frozen out under Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi, with Antonin Kinsky preferred between the sticks.
Despite the sour end to his time at the club, Vicario's Tottenham tenure was largely successful. He made 117 appearances for Spurs after arriving from Empoli in June 2023, registering 23 clean sheets along the way. He also played a pivotal role in Tottenham's Europa League triumph in 2024-25, starting nine of their 15 matches en route to lifting the trophy — arguably the crowning achievement of his spell in England.
Familiar Ground in Serie A
Vicario is no stranger to Italian football. The 29-year-old, who has earned five caps for Italy, previously made 73 appearances in Serie A across spells with Cagliari and Empoli. That experience should serve him well as he looks to hit the ground running under Spalletti and cement his place as Juventus' first-choice goalkeeper.
With the €8m buy option included in the loan deal, Juventus have minimised their risk while giving Vicario the platform to prove his worth over the course of a full season. Should he impress, the arrangement could become a permanent one — and Vicario's dream could extend well beyond a single campaign.
