Fermin Lopez ready to step into false nine role for Barcelona after Lewandowski and Torres exits

Barcelona midfielder Fermín López has this week spoken out over the club's attacking reshuffle, admitting he is willing to fill the false nine role following the summer exits of both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

With the veteran Lewandowski having departed and Torres now fresh off leaving La Liga for Paris Saint-Germain, Hansi Flick's frontline looks very different heading into the new campaign. Barcelona remain in the hunt for a new striker before the transfer window closes, but it remains to be seen whether the Catalans will land a new frontman in time.

'I can adapt'

Asked whether he would be happy to operate as a false nine next season, López offered up a confident response during an appearance in front of the media.

“I can adapt, yes. I have played as a false nine in the lower categories of Barça. It’s a position similar to my favorite, which is attacking midfielder. I can also play wide on the left wing, but my best version is as an attacking midfielder.”

The midfielder was also quizzed on who he believes will score the goals for Barcelona this season, and insists Flick still has plenty of options at his disposal.

“I don’t know, but Gordon can also play as a center forward. And Dani [Olmo], Raphinha and I... If there’s any more signings, I don’t know either, but we have many players who can score goals.”

On Ferran Torres' departure

López was also asked specifically about Torres' decision to bring a close to his Camp Nou stint this summer. The 26-year-old's move to reigning back-to-back Champions League holders PSG came as a surprise to many, particularly given that, after Lewandowski's exit, he might have been looking at consistent starting minutes in Flick's frontline.

But the Blaugrana midfielder admits he did not try to convince his compatriot to stay, despite being sad to see him go.

“These are personal decisions and I don’t have all the information, but for me it’s a shame because he was a great teammate and a good player. I wish him all the best. Did I try to convince him to stay? I messaged him when he left to say goodbye. I don’t need to convince him. It was his personal decision, and I’m happy as long as he’s happy.”

With the transfer window still open, all eyes are now on Barcelona's pursuit of a new striker — and on how Flick's reshaped frontline will take shape for the season ahead.
