Mercedes Committed to Russell and Antonelli as F1's 'Silly Season' Heats Up

Formula 1's 'silly season' has well and truly arrived, with driver market speculation reaching a fever pitch at the Red Bull Ring. However, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has made it crystal clear that the Silver Arrows have no intention of joining the Verstappen chase.

Formula 1 Driver Market Feature

Wolff Dismisses Verstappen Links

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Wolff was unequivocal about Mercedes' commitment to their current drivers. "Yeah, we don't want to change things. We've said it also to George, and I think it's a line-up that is good for us. I'm very happy with the two of them," he stated.

The Mercedes boss was responding to questions about George Russell's recent comments suggesting he holds a "multi-year deal" with the team and will be racing for Mercedes in 2027. Russell's affirmation appeared to shut the door on any potential move for Red Bull's four-time World Champion.

When directly asked if Verstappen was now "off the radar" for Mercedes, Wolff confirmed: "We don't want to change things."

Russell-Antonelli Dynamic

Wolff also addressed the dynamic between Russell and rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli this season, with the experienced 28-year-old facing a stern challenge from his 19-year-old counterpart. "When you go into F1, you are resilient, and you have to believe in yourself," said Wolff. "I think George is particularly good at that. All throughout his career there have been ebbs and flows, and when someone appears to be very quick, but he has always been able to find himself and win."

The Mercedes team principal expressed full confidence in both drivers: "I have no doubt that's going to continue. Kimi is clearly very fast, that's why we hired him, and George the same."

On-Track Success for Russell

The comments came after Russell secured pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix, with Antonelli qualifying in fourth. The session was impacted by Verstappen's heavy crash in Q3 and the subsequent yellow flags, which hampered the young Italian's attempts to challenge for pole.

Despite the speculation surrounding other drivers, Russell's performance on Saturday demonstrated why Mercedes are happy to commit to their current lineup as they look toward the new era of regulations in 2026 and beyond.

The Wider Driver Market

While Mercedes have firmly closed the door on Verstappen, the Dutchman's future remains a central talking point in the paddock. Despite having a contract with Red Bull until at least the end of 2028, Verstappen has been linked with various moves, including a potential switch to McLaren.

The 'silly season' has also seen speculation around Esteban Ocon's future with Haas, while Racing Bulls continue to be at the center of driver market discussions as teams position themselves for the future.
