Arteta signs new Arsenal deal with champions targeting an era of dominance

Arteta commits to Arsenal after historic title triumph

Mikel Arteta has agreed a new contract as Arsenal manager, beginning a new phase for a club that has finally returned to the summit of English football. After ending Arsenal’s 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season, Arteta’s next task is to turn the champions into serial winners.

Mikel Arteta on the touchline as Arsenal manager

When Arteta arrived in 2019, Arsenal were 10th in the Premier League and drifting. His tenure has since brought a comprehensive transformation, restoring the club among Europe’s elite and delivering a title that had eluded them since the 2003/04 season.

Arteta is now one of only 13 managers to have won the Premier League. A second title would place him in an even more exclusive group alongside Sir Alex Ferguson, Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal see a “win window”

The contract agreement reflects the importance Arsenal place on continuity. Co-chair Josh Kroenke described extending Arteta’s deal as an “utmost priority” and said the club believes it has entered its “win window.”

“We think we have a chance here to dominate,” Kroenke said.

Arsenal also believe changes elsewhere in the Premier League, including uncertainty following Guardiola’s eventual departure from Manchester City, could create an opportunity to establish sustained control at the top of the game. Arteta’s new deal gives the club stability as it attempts to build on its first title of the era.

Champions League remains the next major prize

European success is the other defining challenge. Arsenal reached only their second Champions League final last season after progressing from quarter-finalists to semi-finalists and then runners-up over a three-year period. Winning the competition would complete an extraordinary rise under Arteta and secure another piece of club history.

The manager’s position as the architect of Arsenal’s culture is central to the club’s ambitions. “Getting the foundations in place is usually the hardest part of the journey,” Kroenke added.

Attack must catch up with Arsenal’s defensive strength

Despite the title win, Arsenal still have areas to improve. The club did not add a transformative forward during the summer, leaving Arteta to extract more from his existing squad while future transfer windows are used to strengthen the attack.

Arsenal’s squad contains several players in or approaching their peak years, and the return to fitness of Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka offers significant encouragement. When the trio were fit throughout the 2023/24 season, Arsenal set a club record for goals. Together again, they scored 10 goals in their first seven games of the current campaign.

The side has also shown signs of becoming more possession-focused. Arsenal are recording more possession, passes and final-third passes than last season, while attempting nearly twice as many long build-up sequences that lead to a shot or a touch in the opposition box.

The approach has not been flawless. A heavy defeat by Brighton exposed problems when Arsenal tried to play through an aggressive press, prompting Arteta to warn his players against complacency.

“This is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level,” Arteta said.

Data still points to Arsenal as title contenders

Arsenal trail Manchester City by three points in the early Premier League table, but their underlying numbers remain among the strongest in the competition. All but one of their 16 goals in all competitions have come from open play, with Saka’s late penalty against Sunderland the only exception.

There was further evidence of their attacking potential in the Champions League opener against Napoli. Arsenal created 4.05 expected goals, their highest recorded figure in the competition, despite scoring only once.

Academy products such as Max Dowman and Marli Salmon have also benefited from the environment created at London Colney. Their emergence, combined with Arteta’s new contract and a largely settled squad, gives Arsenal a platform for a new era—but retaining the title and finally winning in Europe will test whether the club has truly become a dominant force.
