Mulder and Rabada seal dramatic South Africa win in Gqeberha as Australia fold for 295
South Africa level the series with an innings and 31-run victory
South Africa completed a famous win over Australia in the second Test at St George's Park, Gqeberha, beating the tourists by an innings and 31 runs on the final day. The result levels the series and sets up a decider in Cape Town, where the third Test begins on Tuesday.
Rain wiped out much of the first session on day five, which had been Australia's best hope of saving the match. The hosts were also without the injured Anrich Nortje and had to wait for their second new ball.
Boland's resistance ends
Scott Boland, the 37-year-old nightwatchman, had come in the previous evening to partner Travis Head and dead-batted 23 balls for two runs by stumps. He survived 166 deliveries for 40 runs, but his resistance ended when Mulder nipped one back into him, missing his defence to rattle the stumps.
Head had earlier moved on from his overnight position to make 121, his second overseas Test century and his first in over three years. He was dismissed after he tried to climb the bounce of a Mulder delivery and chopped it onto his stumps, giving South Africa a post-drinks breakthrough.
Rabada and Jansen finish the job
Kagiso Rabada, bowling with a second new ball, took 4-77. Steve Smith, batting at No.7 because of a neck issue, was out to a bizarre top edge while chasing a wide bouncer from Rabada, with Matthew Breetzke taking the catch after a slight fumble. Pat Cummins was bowled by a delivery that knocked the top of off stump, and Rabada later floored Mitchell Starc with a full ball.
Marco Jansen took the final wicket, with Josh Hazlewood slashing a loose shot to the slips. Jansen had earlier taken 5-33 on day four, a spell that had put South Africa in control. Wiaan Mulder finished with 3-64.
Mulder's nagging accuracy, bowling with the keeper up and seaming the ball off a pitch that also had the odd sharp turn, was the difference in a session that had looked like belonging to Australia.
A rare result against Australia
It was South Africa's first win over Australia after enforcing a follow-on since 1970, and only their fourth innings victory against the Australians. Earlier in the match, Temba Bavuma made 179 in South Africa's 425-9 declared total.
Brief scores: South Africa 425-9 dec and 0 beat Australia 99 and 295 (following on) by an innings and 31 runs. Travis Head 121; Kagiso Rabada 4-77, Wiaan Mulder 3-64.
