Bavuma’s 179 powers South Africa to series-leveling win over Australia

South Africa answer Durban defeat with a remarkable turnaround

South Africa restored their series against Australia with an innings-and-31-run victory at St George’s Park, transforming a difficult position into a commanding win ahead of the decider at Newlands.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma after the team responded to its defeat in Durban

The response came just a week after South Africa lost the first Test in Durban by 214 runs. In Gqeberha, they had slumped to 110/6 before Temba Bavuma led a recovery that carried them to a declaration at 425/9.

Bavuma and Jansen turn the innings around

Bavuma made a career-best 179, building substantial partnerships with Marco Jansen, who added 132 runs with the captain, and Simon Harmer, whose stand with Bavuma was worth 183. The innings shifted the match decisively after South Africa’s early collapse.

Jansen then took 5/33 in Australia’s first innings, while Kagiso Rabada claimed 4/77 in the second. Australia were dismissed for 99 in their first innings and 295 in their follow-on innings, securing South Africa the win.

Captain praises character and individual confidence

“A lot was asked of us after the first Test in Durban,” Bavuma said. He described the performance as “a spirited effort” and said the team had addressed questions about its character and mentality by digging in when the match became difficult.

Bavuma also spoke about the pressure of watching Steven Smith’s top-edged pull off Rabada sail towards a difficult catch in the wind. He admitted he had turned away, saying: “I was very nervous at that time.” Matthew Breetzke held on after needing two attempts.

Wiaan Mulder, meanwhile, made a crucial contribution by dismissing Travis Head, nightwatchman Scott Boland and Pat Cummins. Bavuma said Mulder “feeds off confidence” and added that the team’s central conversation is “how you can be as good as you can be.”

South Africa head to Newlands with the series level. Bavuma said the team would carry its renewed belief into the decider: “We will take the confidence and belief from this performance. We will look after it.”
