15-Year-Old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shatters Chris Gayle's Record in Historic IPL Eliminator

In a performance that can only be described as a "blitzkrieg," 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has cemented his status as the breakout superstar of IPL 2026. In a high-stakes Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Mullanpur, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener didn't just win a game; he dismantled the history books of the Indian Premier League.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi celebrating his explosive innings

A Season for the Ages: Breaking the 'Gayle' Barrier

The headline achievement of the night was Sooryavanshi surpassing Chris Gayle's legendary record for the most sixes in a single IPL season. Gayle's mark of 59 sixes from 2012 had stood untouched for 14 years, but the teenager breezed past it, eventually finishing the season with a staggering 65 sixes.

Sooryavanshi's impact was evident from the first ball. He reached his 50 in just 16 balls, equalling Suresh Raina's record for the fastest fifty in IPL knockout history. His fearless approach saw him dismantle the SRH attack, including hitting SRH captain Pat Cummins for three sixes in a single over.

"You'd think there's only so much a 15-year-old batter in a league of men can truly achieve. But Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has binned such conventions and rewritten batting rules," described the sheer scale of his impact.

Statistical Dominance

The numbers behind Sooryavanshi's 2026 campaign are unprecedented. He became the first batter in a Men's T20 tournament to score over 600 runs at a strike rate above 200, finishing with 680 runs at a strike rate of 242.85. This also makes him the highest-scoring uncapped batter in a single IPL season, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal's 625 runs in 2023.

During the Eliminator, he scored a breathtaking 97 off 29 balls, striking at 334.48. This innings included 12 sixes—the joint-most by an Indian batter in an IPL innings and the most ever in an IPL knockout game, bettering Shubman Gill's 10.

Match Report: RR's Dominance and SRH's Exit

Fuelled by Sooryavanshi's 97 and a rapid 50 (21) from Dhruv Jurel, Rajasthan Royals posted a massive 243/8, the second-highest total in IPL playoffs history. Despite a spirited effort from SRH, including contributions from Nitish Reddy (38) and Salil Arora (35), they were unable to keep pace. Jofra Archer played a pivotal role with the ball, claiming 3-58 and removing key threats including Travis Head.

The victory sees Rajasthan Royals advance to Qualifier 2, where they will face the Gujarat Titans on May 29, while Sunrisers Hyderabad's campaign comes to an end.
