Philadelphia Union's Alejandro Bedoya blasts Yankee Stadium surface: 'Absolutely the worst field ever'
Philadelphia Union midfielder Alejandro Bedoya delivered a scathing assessment of Yankee Stadium's temporary soccer pitch on Sunday, branding it "absolutely the worst field ever" ahead of his side's dramatic 3-2 victory over New York City FC.

The Bronx venue, primarily home to Major League Baseball's New York Yankees, has regularly drawn scrutiny for its narrow dimensions and sod laid over the baseball diamond's infield dirt. However, conditions ahead of Sunday evening's Major League Soccer fixture appeared particularly poor, with visible patches of dead grass and hard, uncovered dirt across the playing area.
Bedoya Exposes Pitch Conditions on Social Media
During pre-game walkthroughs, Bedoya recorded a video inspecting the turf and shared it on his Instagram account. In the clip, the veteran midfielder highlighted dead patches around midfield and second base before stomping on an uncovered, solid strip near the corner flag that appeared to be the first-base coach's box.
"Look how patchy it is," Bedoya said in the video. "Look at this, rock hard. This is terrible."
As another player in the background vented frustration about the league's venue standards, Bedoya pointed the camera toward an outfield portion of the first-base line that cut directly across the six-yard box.
"I cannot wait for the new stadium," Bedoya added. "Because, yeah, Yankee Stadium, it's cool for baseball. For soccer? Never."
NYCFC Awaiting Move to Etihad Park
NYCFC has used Yankee Stadium as its primary home venue since joining MLS as an expansion franchise in 2015. Relief for visiting teams and the club itself is scheduled for July 2027, when NYCFC is slated to move into Etihad Park, its purpose-built soccer-specific stadium.
While the surface drew intense criticism before kickoff, it did not stop the Union from pulling off an impressive comeback. NYCFC took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but Philadelphia stormed back in the second half, with striker Bruno Damiani netting both the equalizer and the winning goal to seal a 3-2 victory.
