Mitchell Starc dethrones Jasprit Bumrah to become ICC No. 1 Test bowler for the first time
Australia's Mitchell Starc has surged to the summit of the ICC Test bowling rankings for the first time in his career, dethroning India's Jasprit Bumrah after a stunning display against Bangladesh in the second Test in Mackay.
The 36-year-old left-arm paceman claimed 10 wickets in the match, including a devastating 6/12 in the first innings and 4/39 in the second, powering Australia to a commanding innings-and-51-run victory that levelled the World Test Championship series.
Starc moved past New Zealand's Matt Henry and Bumrah in the latest update, opening up a 10-rating-point lead at the top of the table. His previous best ranking was No. 2, a position he first reached after the Boxing Day Test last year. The veteran pacer was also named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series against Bangladesh.
Bumrah's reign ends after two months
Bumrah's latest spell as the world's No. 1 Test bowler lasted two months. Overall, he has now spent 697 days atop the rankings - the most by any Indian bowler and the 14th-highest total in Test cricket history. The Indian pace spearhead is currently sidelined from his side's series against Sri Lanka because of injury.
England, India and Sri Lanka stars on the rise
Elsewhere in the rankings, England's Ollie Robinson made a significant climb of 15 places to No. 11 after taking 5/51 and 3/39 in England's innings-and-103-run victory over Pakistan in Leeds. His teammate Josh Tongue also surged 16 places to No. 17 after an eight-wicket haul in the same Test.
India's Manav Suthar jumped 28 places to a career-best No. 48 following his 10-wicket match haul in India's 165-run win over Sri Lanka in Galle. Sri Lanka bowlers Asitha Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya both gained five places to reach No. 15 and No. 16 respectively.
Other movers in the bowling charts include Australia's Nathan Lyon (up two to No. 10), Pakistan spinner Ali Usman (up 30 to No. 67), England's Jofra Archer (up six to joint-38th), India's Prasidh Krishna (up two to No. 53) and Bangladesh's Shoriful Islam (up 17 to No. 57).
Brook extends lead, Pant returns to top 10
In the batting standings, Harry Brook extended his lead at the top after a knock of 90 against Pakistan, moving 24 points clear of England teammate Joe Root. India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant climbed six places to No. 7, returning to the top 10 for the first time in a year after scores of 39 and 66 against Sri Lanka.
Further batting gains came for Australia's Cameron Green, Sri Lanka's Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha, Pakistan's Abdullah Shafique, and India's KL Rahul, while Devdutt Padikkal re-entered the rankings at No. 59.
