Joe Root Makes History With World Record 219th Test Catch to Overtake Steve Smith at Headingley
Joe Root has etched his name into the annals of cricket history, overtaking Australia great Steve Smith to become the non-wicketkeeping fielder with the most catches in Test cricket history.
Root reached the monumental landmark during Pakistan's second innings of the first Test against England at Headingley, holding onto a sharp catch at leg slip to dismiss Azan Awais off Jofra Archer.
A Masterclass in Tactical Execution
The record-breaking dismissal was the product of sharp on-field tactical awareness between Root and fast bowler Archer. Just deliveries prior to the wicket, Root consulted Archer and adjusted the field by setting a leg slip and short leg.
Archer executed the plan to perfection, sending down a delivery that jagged sharply into Awais. The Pakistani opener attempted a glance toward fine leg but caught the inside half of the bat, sending the ball straight to Root at leg slip. Awais departed for 9 off 14 balls, leaving both Pakistan openers back in the pavilion early in their second innings.
All-Time Test Catch Leaders
The catch took Root to 219 in Test cricket, moving him one clear of Steve Smith (218 catches). Root had equalled Smith's tally during Pakistan's first innings before claiming the outright record in the second.

England Dominate at Headingley
Root's historic moment capped a dominant performance by England in Leeds. The hosts were bowled out for 409 around 40 minutes into day three, adding 43 runs to their overnight total of 366/8.
Archer provided handy lower-order resistance with a breezy 23 featuring two boundaries and a maximum before running out of partners. Pakistan pacer Khurram Shahzad wrapped up the innings by removing Jamie Smith (25) and Josh Tongue (8) to finish with 3/133.
England's commanding first-innings total established a massive 238-run lead after bowling Pakistan out for just 171 on day one, firmly putting the hosts in the driver's seat.
