Gareth Bale Reflects on Retirement, the 'Chess Game' of Modern Football, and Mourinho's Return to Madrid
Having stepped away from the game at age 33, Gareth Bale reveals that he feels no longing to return to the pitch. "No, not really," he stated when asked if he misses playing. "I always knew there was going to be a beginning and an end... I didn’t want to just keep playing for the sake of playing."
The Evolution of the Game
Bale believes that modern football has undergone a fundamental tactical shift. He observes that the individual freedom and dribbling that defined his style of play are becoming rarer, as managers exert more control over players.
"Football is not so much an end-to-end game now. It’s more of a chess game than a basketball game, which isn’t as exciting," Bale remarked. While he pointed to stars like Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Jr., and Lamine Yamal as players who can still "get you off your seat," he suggests many others simply aren't allowed to play with that level of spontaneity.
Managing Egos at Real Madrid
Bale also shared his thoughts on the current state of Real Madrid and the return of Jose Mourinho to the club. Describing the Madrid dressing room as appearing "a bit all over the place," Bale believes Mourinho's experience is exactly what the team needs to stabilize.
Drawing a comparison to Carlo Ancelotti, Bale noted that at a club of Madrid's stature, "you don’t need to really coach. You need to manage egos." Regarding Mourinho, he added: "He only prods to get the best out of you... Jose has been at Madrid, he understands the dynamic and he knows how things work."
Thoughts on Tottenham and the US Experience
Bale expressed relief that the season ended for Tottenham Hotspur, hoping that a fresh start under Roberto De Zerbi and a strong summer transfer window can steer the club away from further disappointment. He also reflected on his time with LAFC, noting that while he enjoyed the "family-friendly" atmosphere, the lack of relegation and immediate consequences for losing in the MLS was a significant adjustment from the high-pressure environment of Real Madrid.
