Mahomes-backed KC Current shatter attendance record as 18,000 fans pack season finale
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes have another reason to toast their investment in Kansas City sport. The Kansas City Current turned their final home match of the 2026 season into a citywide celebration, drawing a franchise-record crowd expected to reach around 18,000 fans for the biggest-attended match in club history.
A record crowd spills beyond the stands
The milestone underscored the surging appeal of women's soccer in Kansas City, where the Mahomes family's involvement with the Current has become part of a broader push to build a strong sporting community. CPKC Stadium seats only about 12,000, so to bring more of the city into the occasion the club introduced a new Ground Pass experience at Current Landing, the entertainment district surrounding the ground.
Around 6,000 supporters gathered in the outdoor area, where large screens, food, games and family-friendly activities created a festival-like atmosphere. The $10 pass granted access to five viewing screens, a children's zone and halftime entertainment, giving fans a way to take part even if they could not secure a stadium ticket. The matchday also doubled as a Chiefs watch party.
Jocelyn Monroe, the club's chief marketing officer, framed the day as one that brought the city together.
"It's a fun day to come out and celebrate Kansas City and celebrate sports in Kansas City and be a part of history because this will be our largest attended match in Kansas City Current history," said Jocelyn Monroe, chief marketing director of KC Current.
The club also stressed the value of making its matches accessible to more people.
"What really makes the atmosphere is the people, so having more of our fans have the opportunity to come down and build out an accessible area for them is something we always were thinking about," Monroe said.
For Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, who are part of the ownership group behind the Current, the turnout reflected the team's growing reach beyond the pitch — proof that a match can become a citywide event rather than an experience limited to those inside the stadium.
Current Landing becomes a matchday destination
The celebration brought fresh energy to Current Landing, with two dining options — Revel Bar & Grill and Providence Pizza — adding to the district's appeal on an already busy matchday. Providence Pizza marked its grand opening on the day, with owner Aaron acknowledging both the excitement and the nerves of launching on the club's busiest day.
"We are excited and nervous. This is our grand opening, so we are opening our restaurant on one of the probably busiest days for Current Landing," said Aaron, the owner of Providence Pizza.
The Current plan to build on the momentum by hosting more One Current events at Current Landing throughout the year, giving supporters additional chances to connect with the team outside regular matchdays. By blending soccer, food and entertainment, the Mahomes-backed club is working to make its home ground a true destination for the wider Kansas City community.
