BCCI served formal complaint after scorer's blunder denies Jharkhand U-19 women a tie against Uttarakhand
One-run defeat ignites row as Jharkhand cry foul over missing run
A scoring blunder in a Women's Under-19 domestic fixture has erupted into a full-blown controversy, with the Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA) formally approaching the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over what it alleges was a match-defining error by the official scorer.
What happened in Nagpur
Uttarakhand batted first in the encounter at Nagpur and posted 134 for 6. Jharkhand was then bowled out for 133, according to the official scorecard, and was declared a one-run loser. But the JCA insists the contest should have finished as a tie, arguing that a run was wrongly omitted from its total.
The flashpoint, as reported by The Indian Express, came in the 30th over of Jharkhand's innings. On the fourth ball of the over, one of the Jharkhand batters was run out attempting to complete a second run. The JCA alleges the pair had already taken the first run, but the official scorer never added it to the team's tally. Crucially, the scoreboard at the ground reportedly displayed the updated score after every ball — yet the official scorer's records did not reflect the extra run.
A tie that became a defeat
The discrepancy proved decisive in the closing stages. Believing they required two runs off the final delivery to win, Jharkhand managed just a single and the players celebrated what they thought was a levelled contest. They were stunned when the official result flashed a one-run defeat instead.
Members of the Jharkhand squad reportedly remonstrated with the official scorer and asked for the figure to be corrected, but the scorer refused to alter the decision.
Why Jharkhand went to the BCCI
A Jharkhand official told The Indian Express that the dropped run reshaped both the outcome and the team's tournament hopes. “The scoreboard at the far end had the updated score after each ball but the main scorer forgot to add one run which cost us a tie. We requested the scorer to make the correction but he didn’t. As per the rule, umpires have to go by the scorer and not at the person doing scoring at the scoreboard,” the official said.
The JCA has now taken the matter to the BCCI, contending that the match ended in a tie but was logged as a one-run loss because of the scoring mistake that eliminated the side from the competition.
