Project 2027: India's Selection Committee to Decide Future of Kohli, Rohit, and Jadeja

The Road to 2027 Begins

The Indian men's senior selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to meet on May 19. While the immediate goal is to pick the squads for the upcoming one-off Test and ODI series against Afghanistan, the broader objective is the formulation of "Project 2027"—the blueprint for the next ODI World Cup.

Evaluating the Legends

The meeting is expected to bring clarity to the futures of three of India's biggest stars: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja. The team management aims to end ongoing speculation regarding their roles and longevity in the ODI setup.

Virat Kohli appears to be in the safest position, as his recent performances have reinforced his status as a giant of the format. However, the situation is more precarious for Rohit Sharma. The former captain has struggled with hamstring issues and a dip in white-ball form, leading to concerns that his days with the national team may be numbered.

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja faces a different challenge. Despite strong support from the management, "relevance" and fitness will be the key metrics. It is expected that Jadeja will need to "punch above his weight" to secure his spot for the 2027 event.

Fitness and New Talent

The selectors have sent a stern message: there will be no compromise on fitness standards. Stringent measures will remain in place as the squad, led by Shubman Gill for the three ODIs starting June 14, is assembled.

Beyond the veterans, the committee will address Hardik Pandya's bowling workload. Despite regular appearances in the IPL, Pandya has not played an ODI since March 2025, prompting a need for clarity on his role. Simultaneously, the management is keen to integrate youth, with 22-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy likely to be fast-tracked for the tours of Ireland and England following his improved IPL performances.

As the selection committee prepares for the May 19 meeting, the mandate is clear: every upcoming game is a trial for the 2027 World Cup, and the selectors are "in no mood to hand out freebies."
