IPL 2026 Playoff Race: Three Teams Qualify, Five Still Battle for Final Spot

The road to the IPL 2026 playoffs has reached a fever pitch. Following a series of decisive matches, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Gujarat Titans (GT), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have officially sealed their places in the knockout stage.

RCB became the first team to book their ticket after a clinical victory over Punjab Kings in Dharamsala. Shortly after, SRH's triumph over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk paved the way for both SRH and GT to qualify. Conversely, the race has come to an end for the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, who have both been officially eliminated from contention.

The Battle for the Top Two

While three teams are in, the fight for a top-two finish—which provides a significant advantage in the playoffs—remains intense. RCB currently leads the table with 18 points and a massive Net Run Rate (NRR) of 1.065. They can guarantee a top-two finish if they defeat SRH in their final encounter or if CSK defeats GT.

For GT and SRH, the top two spots will likely depend on NRR. If SRH beats RCB and GT beats CSK, all three teams could finish on 18 points, leaving the NRR to determine who claims the advantage.

Five Teams, One Spot: The Qualification Scenarios

With seven league-stage matches remaining, five teams are still vying for the fourth and final playoff position. Here is how the scenarios look for the contenders:

Rajasthan Royals (RR)

The Royals have the most straightforward path. With two games remaining against already eliminated sides (LSG and MI), RR controls their own destiny. Winning both matches would take them to 16 points, which is guaranteed to be enough for qualification.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

KKR can qualify with 15 points if they win their remaining games and Rajasthan Royals drop at least one match. Their path also involves monitoring the results of Punjab Kings.

Punjab Kings (PBKS)

The Kings' hopes are fading. With only one game left against LSG, they can reach a maximum of 15 points. They need to win that match and rely on RR and KKR stumbling to sneak in.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC)

Both CSK and DC face an uphill battle. CSK must beat GT and hope that RR, PBKS, and KKR all lose. Delhi Capitals, burdened by a poor NRR of -0.871, essentially need to win their final match against KKR and hope for a total collapse of the other three rivals.
