Allison turns the day around for Worcestershire

Worcestershire seized control of their County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire after a dramatic opening day at New Road in which all 20 wickets fell.

After Worcestershire were dismissed for 214, Derbyshire appeared to have taken the initiative when Muhammad Abbas claimed 5-63. However, the hosts responded with a devastating spell of bowling, dismissing Derbyshire for just 88 in a single session.

Ben Allison led the charge with 5-22, while Tom Taylor added 3-27. Only Wayne Madsen, who made 40, offered sustained resistance as Derbyshire collapsed from 47-5. Allison removed Harry Came, Matthew Montgomery and Martin Andersson during a lively opening spell before completing his five-wicket haul later in the innings.

Abbas makes early impact

Derbyshire's Muhammad Abbas had earlier produced a high-class display, taking five wickets as Worcestershire's top order struggled. He dismissed Dan Lategan for 26 and Rehaan Edavalath for 11 before Jake Libby and Adam Hose helped steady the innings.

Hose made 27 before falling lbw to Amit Basra, after which Derbyshire's bowlers reduced Worcestershire to 139-7. Abbas then removed Jake Libby for 33 and later trapped Henry Cullen lbw for 15, securing his first five-wicket haul of the season and the 59th occasion on which he has taken at least five wickets in a first-class innings.

Tom Taylor's unbeaten 39 and Fateh Singh's brisk 25 helped Worcestershire reach 214, with Martin Andersson completing the innings at the stroke of tea.

Worcestershire finish strongly

Tom Taylor struck in the third over of Derbyshire's reply, with Ben Allison taking a fine slip catch to dismiss Yousaf bin Naeem. Allison then helped reduce the visitors to 47-5, and although Wayne Madsen resisted, the lower order could not prolong the innings.

Worcestershire reached 5-0 from the final three overs, with Allison and Fateh Singh acting as nightwatchmen. They lead by 131 runs with all 10 second-innings wickets remaining.
