Pietersen calls for McCullum exit, backs Flower to take over after England's 4-1 Ashes rout

Pietersen wants coaching overhaul after Ashes humiliation

Former England batter Kevin Pietersen has demanded a shake-up of the national team's coaching staff after Australia thrashed England 4-1 in the 2025-26 Ashes series.

Pietersen, never shy of voicing his opinion on the direction of English cricket, singled out head coach Brendon McCullum as the man who should make way, and pitched a familiar name as his successor.

Flower backed as the man to lead the rebuild

The former England captain threw his weight behind ex-head coach Andy Flower, who guided the side to significant success in his previous spell in charge and has since added silverware across multiple global franchise competitions.

Describing the suggestion as a "wild thought," Pietersen argued that Flower has moved with the times and is well placed to handle the modern game's demands. "Flower has evolved and understands modern players," Pietersen said, pointing to the Zimbabwean's track record since leaving the England set-up.

A decorated franchise CV

Flower's credentials beyond his international tenure are hard to dispute. He has lifted trophies in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), England's The Hundred, and most recently the Indian Premier League (IPL), giving him the rare distinction of having won titles across three of the world's leading T20 competitions.

Whether the England and Wales Cricket Board acts on Pietersen's call remains to be seen, but the 4-1 scoreline has inevitably intensified scrutiny on McCullum and the current backroom team.
