Karnataka's Ranji Trophy survival on the line against Saurashtra at Alur

Under-fire Karnataka braced for Saurashtra's might as campaign teeters

BENGALURU: Karnataka's Ranji Trophy campaign hangs in the balance as they renew one of domestic cricket's most compelling rivalries against Saurashtra in their second league engagement of the season on Sunday at the KSCA Alur Stadium. With just a single point from their opening fixture, there is little margin for another slip-up for stand-in captain Shreyas Gopal and his team.

A rivalry that has hurt Karnataka

Saurashtra have often been a thorn in Karnataka's side. Last season, they edged Karnataka on the first-innings lead in a league game, but the more painful memory remains their four-wicket win in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy semifinals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The teams now meet again with Karnataka under real pressure to get their season back on track.

Karnataka's predicament

The hosts arrive at Alur on the back of a defeat to Madhya Pradesh at the same venue and having conceded the first-innings lead to Andhra in their season opener, leaving them with just one point. In the opener, R Smaran produced a rescue act with a second-innings 126 after a top-order collapse, according to prior reporting from October 11, but he is among the key names now missing.

Karnataka will be without batters Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul — away on national duty — and R Smaran. Rain and overcast conditions could further complicate matters for the hosts, piling the challenge onto Gopal's shoulders.

Getting the batting order right

For head coach and former captain R Vinay Kumar, the first task is settling the batting. Mayank Agarwal has had an underwhelming start, managing just five and 18, and with Rahul unavailable he will have a new opening partner — the choice is between KV Aneesh, who has struggled for runs, and newcomer Rohan Patil. KL Shijith will be a crucial cog at the top, while Karun Nair, who struck a second-innings century in the previous match, anchors a middle order that also features Nikin Jose and Aneeshwar Gautam.

Bowling resources

With a pace-friendly surface expected, Karnataka will lean on the experience of Vidwath Kaverappa and Vyshak Vijayakumar, both returning from injuries. Manvanth Kumar and left-arm spinner Abhilash Shetty are also options, though the side could opt for a lone specialist spinner in Shreyas Gopal, with Shikhar Shetty providing additional spin cover.

Saurashtra's settled strength

Saurashtra, in contrast, are a formidable unit boasting a deep batting line-up and a bowling attack equally adept with pace and spin. Ravindra Jadeja's absence may not hurt them much given their proven bench strength. Led by veteran pacer Jaydev Unadkat, they field a settled side featuring seasoned campaigners Harvik Desai, Chirag Jani, Jay Gohil and Arpit Vasavada. Prerak Mankad comes into the contest on the back of a crucial 129 against Chhattisgarh, while Unadkat will have support from Chetan Sakariya and Chirag Jani in the pace department.

'We need to play our best game'

Vinay Kumar is under no illusion about the task ahead. “They are obviously strong. Nowadays, you can't take any team lightly in domestic cricket. Anybody can come and win a game against you. We need to play our best game. Saurashtra plays hard cricket and won't give up easily. But we are also ready to take the challenge,” he said.

For Karnataka to avoid another early setback, they will need contributions across the board and the resolve to match Saurashtra's intensity.
