Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns to India T20I XI after four years in rain-hit series decider vs West Indies
Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns to India T20I XI after four years
The M Chinnaswamy Stadium roared its approval as Bhuvneshwar Kumar walked back into India's T20I playing XI on Saturday — a ground that holds special meaning for the veteran pacer, who made his T20I debut there. The 36-year-old's return came in the most high-stakes of settings: the rain-hit fifth and final T20I against West Indies, a series decider with the five-match rubber locked at 2-2.
Rain forces nine-over contest
Persistent rain disrupted proceedings at the venue, reducing the series decider to a nine-over-per-side contest. With the five-match series tied at 2-2, the shortened encounter leaves precious little room for error, the winner set to clinch the series outright.
Two changes for India
India captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed two changes to the side, with Shivam Dube and Bhuvneshwar Kumar coming into the playing XI. Bhuvneshwar's inclusion came after Arshdeep Singh's participation was in doubt following an injury sustained during India's chase in the fourth T20I — though both feature in the named XI.
“Quick turnaround. The wicket looks pretty good. We just have to be aggressive, not get pressed too much. It's important that we seize the game. Important to put the best foot forward. They have a good array of shots, they have been playing solid and power-packed cricket. We need to think about our strengths as well. Shivam Dube and Bhuvi come in for us, two changes,” Iyer said at the toss.
Hope opts to bowl first
West Indies skipper Shai Hope won the toss and opted to field first, backing his side's batting depth to chase down whatever target is set in the abbreviated contest.
“We are going to bowl first. Rain around, but it's a good pitch. That gives us the best chance to chase it. We tend to have a lot of batters. Focus is on bowling, it's a shortened game. I just think we finish the series strong. Guys are looking forward to it,” Hope said.
The comeback trail
Bhuvneshwar's return to the XI caps a remarkable resurgence. He was recalled to India's T20I squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand on October 9, 2026 — four years after his last international appearance, which came against New Zealand on November 22, 2022. The veteran pacer, a Royal Challengers Bengaluru favourite, was the joint-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2026 with 28 wickets for RCB, and cut his body fat from 19% to 14% under personal coach Surya Pratap Yadav. On October 13, 2026, Ravichandran Ashwin credited the recall to consistency rather than a chase for a comeback, pointing to Bhuvneshwar's performances for RCB in the IPL.
