Como president hands Cesc Fabregas free exit to Barcelona: 'He can go wherever he wants'
Como won't block a Fabregas departure
Como president Mirwan Suwarso has insisted that Cesc Fabregas is free to leave the Italian club for Barcelona — or anywhere else — at any moment, dismissing the need for any special release clause in his contract.
Speaking on the Sports Uncensored podcast, Suwarso addressed speculation that the former Spain and Barcelona midfielder has a bespoke clause in his Como deal that would allow him to join one of his old clubs under favourable terms. The president was unequivocal.
"He's doesn't need a clause to get wherever he wants," Suwarso said. "In a business like this, Cesc Fabregas is a friend more than anything else. He can go wherever he wants, whenever he wants. So if tomorrow he gets a call, or he calls me, and says 'Hey I want to go to Leverkusen tomorrow' - for example - I would say 'is there something that you want to do?' Then yeah go. I don't need any compensation."
The remarks arrive after reports on 30 September 2026 from Marca, citing Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, that Fabregas had negotiated a special clause in his Como contract allowing him to depart under very affordable conditions should Barcelona, Arsenal or Chelsea offer him a job. Those claims intensified talk that the former midfielder could be a long-term successor to Hansi Flick at Camp Nou.
'Our Johan Cruyff'
Suwarso then paid tribute to the impact Fabregas has made since arriving at Como in 2022. The World Cup winner initially joined as a player before taking over as first-team coach.
"He's helped us to build our club. He created the football foundation right? I always like to say he's our Johan Cruyff, like as Cruyff to Barca, he created the fundamentals for us," Suwarso said.
Under Fabregas, Como secured Champions League football for the first time in the club's history and will come face-to-face with Barcelona in the League Phase in January.
Busquets' earlier backing
The links to the Barcelona dugout are not new. On 12 September 2026, Sergio Busquets tipped his former midfield partner for the Camp Nou hotseat, declaring simply: "It's possible." Busquets, now taking his first steps towards a coaching career as an assistant with Juliano Belletti's Barca Atletic side, praised Fabregas's work at Como ahead of their Champions League League Phase meeting in January.
